Good week at Southwest Ambulance and bad day at Specialized medical at 9:15 p.m. on 2004-08-28 My first week being an EMT-I on the streets went well. I was a little shakey and unsure at first, but nothing that I couldn't handle. It's a different world out there than the one they paint for you in the classroom or at special events. A different train of thought. I still have some kinks to work out, but they are all common rookie issues. My precepter is an EMT-I as well and the same age. I'm lucky to have him. I think it is a great idea to have your trainer be your level rather than a medic because you get the point of view of what your role is. It's easier to pick up on. I've been trained as a medic and it took a little rewiring to not always play the lead like a medic and be supportive instead. It'll be a little awkward when I start my medic internship and be bouncing back and forth from medic and EMT-I roles. Hopefully I won't forget which hat I'll be wearing for the day. I picked up an special event shift today becuase I figured the extra cash couldn't hurt. The day turned out to be a nightmare. It started with a lack or necessary equipment being at my even. I had a oxygen tank with no regulator/adaptor so I could not give any patients that I might have gotten any 02. Airway and breathing always come first and they screwed me on that. There were also essential drugs missing from my bag along with no glucometer. If I had a diabetic come in I couldn't check ther blood sugar. I called the lady in charge of supply and I found out that they have no regulator/adaptors for the oxygen tanks cause the boss sold them, the drug were on order and not here yet and they didn't have any glucometers either. I like my coworkers but that was not acceptable. They put my butt on the line because I'm responsible for the well being of my patients, but I didn't get any that day so I lucked out. Of course they didn't tell me I was missing these things till after I got there cause they knew I wouldn't have gone without everything I needed. After that I got a call from my mother and she told me that a neigbor of our's was shot three times in the back last night after getting robbed at his house. He's alive and looking like he'll do fine. I just hope he's still able to walk after all this. It's scary when it happens that close to home and to someone you know well. After all that I was trying to get a hold of someone to try and get them to drop by some lunch since there was nothing to eat there. No luck. I starved all day. By the time I got home I was a bitch queen. I snapped at my boyfriend for not having his phone with him today. I was pissed off and he happened to be the only one around and I took it out on him. I know that was very uncalled for and I'm sorry about it. I was not myself. Hunger and stress took over. I was much better once I ate something. This was a long entry and I should stop now. I'm going to go get soem needed R&R. ta-ta for now |
